At the start of every year I have a sense of trepidation about what the coming 365 days has install for cinema. I suspect, somewhat irrationally, that this will be the year that quality cinema starts to diminish. I worry that this will be the year the studios will only make films that cater for the multiplex target audience, that being 15 year old teenagers;

Six years ago, announcing you were going to see the new Ben Affleck movie would have been met with howls of derisive laughter since Affleck had become the laughing stock of Hollywood after his well-documented and completely disastrous relationship with Jennifer Lopez caused him to become a tabloid figure of fun, and a string of absolute stinkers like Man About Town, Surviving Christmas and the unspeakably awful Gigi severely dented his reputation as an actor.
