The Top 10 Best Superhero Movies

The Top 10 Best Superhero Movies

By FilmFellaJames

So, I think we can all agree that Hollywood has gone superhero crazy in recent years, a no brainer commercially ever since, in my opinion, the late great Christopher Reeve wrapped a red cape around his broad shoulders in Richard Donners Superman. An apt film title considering the heroic nature that surrounded Reeve, a real life superman.

Comic book superheroes have captured the imagination of generations of comic book fans and movie enthusiasts the world over.  The essence of the hero transcends across cultures and countries upholding the belief that perhaps, out there somewhere is a hero waiting to save us all.

Unfortunately, our world is populated with a wealth of super villains.  Be they villains of finance, genocidal maniacs or terrorists, no amount of charity and good will or peacekeeping in war torn countries has managed to rub out the menace that perpetually, since the dawn of man, hinders our progress as a species.  No one hero has risen to the top to make a stand with an iron fist placing a smack-down on the scum of this planet.  Therefore we retire to the cinema to cheer on heroes of our own imagination ever hopeful that maybe one day, a hero will rise and set the planet straight.

Till that day however we sit and we watch as the world burns chucking our cash at the multiplexes that tease us with hope and entertain us with special effects.  Nerds like me make lists.

This therefore is a list of the best and the worst superhero movies.  A look at some comic book screen gems and some comic book screen stinkers.  Love them or hate them, here they are at The FilmFellas…

Part One.  The Best top 10.

“Your the best, ahaaa, and nothing in the world will keep you down…”

10.  Film: Unbreakable.  (2000)

Opinion: M. Night Shyamalan kicks off the top ten of the best despite sourcing this film from his own idea. It’s not based on a comic book, it is an original.  An idea that kinda sums up the flowery prologue to this blog, therefore it is a justifiable entry in this list.

Mr Glass…Comic book nerd.

First off, it has great casting, essential ingredients to ensure a worthwhile watch.  Bruce Willis is the hero and Sam Jackson is the villain, see, perfect casting.  Secondly the story is thrilling in its evolution and despite it being made without the aid of elaborate special effects and overly dramatic action set pieces, the essence of the hero is well communicated throughout.  It’s also a great film in its own right, a tad bit slow admittedly but a real good watch, “The kids used to call me Mr Glass.”  That shit sends shivers down my spine and pumps goose pimples out at a rate of knots, there had to be someone at the other end of the scale, he kept looking and he found him.  Genius.

Coolness: Bruce Willis as the Unbreakable David Dunne, Sam Jackson as Mr Glass.

Best Scene: The ending…It is after all a Shyamalan film.

Film Fact: Of all the films that Shyamalan has made, this one is his personal fave.

Friends at the start, Bruce and Sam go for a stroll

9.  Film: Blade.  (Marvel Comics:  1998)

Opinion: Wesley Snipes as the half breed vampire hunter always hits the spot.  The comic books were bloody average but the movie was just superb.  Blood from floor to ceiling, carnage of epic proportions, the opening scene where he is in the club bathed in blood with a wicked tune over the top while he goes through vampires like a hot knife through butter, poetry.  Vampires as a mythology inspire fear and dread, unless your watching Twilight, then it’s just shit, but with Blade in the neighbourhood, who fuckin cares?  Blade, the solution.  Action was awesome, some great lines and despite Blade Trinity, a worthy entrant to the list.  Would you want Blade on your team?  Damn straight you would, no fear and a sword.  Awesome.

Blood on the dancefloor? Bring it bitches.

Coolness: Wesley Snipes, in one of his best roles as Blade and of course his sword, that’s one hell of a weapon.

Vampire carnage.  Blades hairdo.

Best Scene: The opener in the club.

Film Fact: LL Cool J was originally considered for the part of Blade.

Edwards gonna shit himself when he turns round

8.  Film: V for Vendetta.  (Vertigo/DC Comics:  2005)

Opinion: “But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace sobriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona…

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by- gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.  [carves “V” into poster on wall]  The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. [giggles] Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V.

Nuff said…Genius.

She must live in Wales. Bloody fed up.

Coolness: Hugo Weaving.  This guy managed to portray emotion, feeling and all that other stuff with a mask on.

This film is populated with great ideas, a powerful message and lines so brilliant at times it is like listening to a symphony orchestra belting out Mozart.

Best Scene: The letter.

Film Fact:The scene where V tips over black and red dominoes to form a giant letter V,  involved 22,000 dominoes. It took 4 professional domino dudes 200 hours to set up.

Outnumbered? No problem.

7.  Film: Ironman.  (Marvel Comics:  2008)

Opinion: Robert Downey Junior and Jon Favreau combine to make not only a real awesome superhero film but also a damn good movie.  Action and thrills abound as Ironman blasts out of a terrorist cave to send the crooks of earth a message…I got more money than you, more skills and I have a suit that will wipe the floor with the lotta ya.  Cease and desist or I will tear you a new asshole.  I loved it.  So did everyone else I know.  Solid number 7.

“Sticks n stones may break my bones but inside this iron shit, y’all cant do anything!”

Coolness: Robert Downey Junior owns the role of Tony Stark, genius billionaire playboy.  The suit…obviously.

Best Scene: Ironman leaves the cave where he is held captive.  Very very cool.

Film Fact: Directors who were considered for this film included, Quentin Taratino (in 1999), Joss Whedon (in 2001) and Nick Cassevetes (in 2004).

6.  Film: X-Men:  First Class.  (Marvel Comics:  2011)

Opinion: After a series of hits and misses within the X-Men franchise, along came this, the film that the X-Men deserved.  Intelligent, thought provoking and action packed, X- Men First Class redeems the rushed offerings that came before it.  This film is high on my list because as much as it sets up the hero, it sets up the villain to great effect as well.  The origin of Magneto, the best of all the super villains and most justifiably so as well, is what drives this film for me.  The opening scene with Kevin Bacon was thrilling and unnerving and set a tone that most super hero films stray away from.  The subject material was sensitive but the delivery was exceptional and as a result, X-Men First Class is literally First Class.

Kevin Bacon…Legend.

Coolness: A superb script + Kevin Bacon, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy = a     really totally fricken awesome film directed by Matthew Vaughn.  January Jones as Emma Frost.

Best Scene: Kevin Bacon getting the best out of a young Magneto after having his mother executed in front of him.

Film Fact: “X-Men” specialists were hired to help the cast understand their roles.

Mmmmm, Frost.

5.  Film: Batman.  (DC Comics:  1989)

Opinion: Only Tim Burton could have created the visceral and imaginative world of the 80’s Batman comics.  A solid task for any film maker at the time, only he could have pulled it off and he did.  Michael Keaton as Batman a worthy shout despite fierce opposition from everyone involved, but Jack Nicholson as the Joker, a master-class.  Whatever Nicholson is in, it’s gold.  Whether you liked the film or not, you cant deny the genius of Jack in this movie.  I also loved the soundtrack, perfectly suited and booted.  Ladies and gentlemen all pay homage to the pint sized supremo, Prince.  A mash up of eccentric talent, that’s Batman.

The Batmobile, now that’s hot.

Coolness: The Batmobile and zany action set pieces.

Batman score by Danny Elfman and Prince’s Batdance, good times.

Best Scene: The Joker in the Museum.

Film fact: Willem Dafoe, David Bowie, John Lithgow, Tim Curry, and James Woods, were considered for the role of the Joker.

Jack, way more sinister than Heath.

4.  Film: The Dark Knight.  (DC Comics:  2008)

Opinion: It was a real tough choice for 4th spot, it really was.  I settled with this one because it is better than Batman Begins and in my opinion the best of all of the Batman films to date.  This is because technically it is astounding.  Visuals and sound effects, excellently realised with inventive and plausible action set pieces.  The stuff you see in this film is convincing.  None though are more convincing than Heath Ledgers performance as the Joker.  A different Joker to Jack Nicholson, a more realistic Joker and possibly Heath Ledgers finest role as an actor.  Prior to this film, action spectacles such as this within the arena of the comic book genre tended to rely heavily on the fact that reality is suspended within the realm of the superhero, however, what Nolan has crafted in this series of films, utilising attention to detail and realism, is a believable superhero.  Batman in this sense has therefore been resurrected from the atrocities that are Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.  Nolan did that and I for one am grateful.

Broke Back Batman.

Coolness: Heath Ledger.  The Batmobile.  Morgan Freeman.

Best Scene: Batman captures Lau.  Just wow.

Film Fact: Off-duty Chicago police officers along with officers from Elyria OH; Hammond IN; Buffalo Grove, IL and Joliet, IL played the Gotham City police officer extras. Realism.  Nice.

Heath Ledger, R.I.P.

It’s sexy and it knows it.

3.  Film: Spider-Man.  (Marvel Comics:  2002)

Opinion: This is my personal favourite of all of the superhero films to date.  This film might not be one of the best in uber technical terms, despite the technical wizardry involved to make Spidey a reality, it ain’t a Nolan movie.  However, in terms of capturing the essence of the Spider-Man comic books, this one nailed it.  Spider-Man is not particularly edgy, he is more child friendly, a sentiment echoed in the series when Parker chats to a young lad about where Spider-Man has gone.  Kids love a superhero and he was my childhood favourite.  The action is immense, stuff with the Green Goblin, swinging in between buildings and the burning building scene in particular are epic.  It has Kirsten Dunsts nipples in it as well, which is nice.  For all of these reasons and more, Spider-Man makes my number three.

See, I told you….

Coolness: Spidey himself…Check this out:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-r7qymfa0Q

Great action.

Kirsten Dunsts nipples.

Best Scene: Spidey enters a burning building only to be met by the Green Goblin who tries to kill him.

Willem Dafoe did 90% of his own stunts, in this.

2.  Film: Avengers Assemble.  (Marvel Comics:  2012)

Opinion: An ensemble of some of Marvels finest, under the expert eye of Joss Whedon.  A fancy script punctuated with moments of genius comedy.  A decent Hulk.  This is Avengers Assemble.  As far as thrill rides go, you will be hard pressed to find anything as thrilling as this, they pulled out all the stops and delivered a superb comic book hero gang bang.  It was a big task, but, watching this, Whedon knew exactly how to craft a truly memorable cinematic experience.  The action is awesome, lines, awesome and it has Robert Downey Junior in it as well, awesome.  This dude never ceases to amaze me, pure talent.  He understands the character so well that because of him, this film is underpinned by an assured confidence that really drives the Avengers forward.  The casting was spot on though for all of the characters.  As mentioned above, finally a cool Hulk, the real deal, no more fannying about, HULK SMASH.  Nice one Whedon, you are the man, we all simply can not wait for another.

Goddam it Cap, where did you park the car?”

Coolness: Lots and lots of action, well paced and hilarious in parts.

The script.

The Hulk.

Best Scene: Puny God!

Film Fact: Lou Ferrigno, the original Hulk, is the voice of the Hulk in this, in fact, if the Hulk is in it, he has had a hand in it.  Cool.

Thor, clearly determined to win the dance-off.

“HULK SMILE FOR PUNY CAMERA…”

1.  Film: Watchmen.  (DC Comics:  2009)

Opinion: Alan Moore, is a Legend.  Responsible for another of this lists entries, V for Vendetta, he created and wrote arguably one of the finest comic books ever conceived.  It is an adult comic book sure, however, it is a powerful piece of literature as well as a fantastic work of visual art, courtesy of illustrator Dave Gibbons and colourist, John Higgins.  When it was revealed that 300 director Zack Snyder was going to make it into a film, I wondered whether he would do a good enough job for the master Alan Moore, who I understand has never bothered to watch it citing a movie would not get it all in.  Well, having read the comic and watched the film, Zack ended up doing a pretty damn good job.  There were changes made, naturally, Moores work is so expansive, capturing it all would be a near impossibility, however that said, the film was wonderfully rendered and managed to maintain most of the umpf that the comic books contained.  The casting and the writing was also spot on.  Truly memorable characters, fo sho.  It is a fully rounded piece of cinematic gold, a masterpiece among comic book adaptations and simply, in my opinion, the finest superhero film ever made.

Sexy Action. Yup.

What’s the cop on the right lookin at eh?

Coolness: This film, from beginning to end is cool.  End of.

Best Scene: All of them.

Film Fact: The first trailer for the film, which premièred before The Dark Knight sparked so much interest that it sent the graphic novel back onto the best-seller list. Barnes and Noble Bookstores reported selling out of the novel nationwide. (US)

“Yeah, I’m a blue dude, what of it??”

“Spideyyyyy save meeeeeeeeee…”

Diclaimer:

First off, this list is not exhaustive.  Making the list was hardly going to be a definitive task, I mean, I have left out some gems I am sure.  For example, Kick Ass was one that I considered placing in the top ten but, as the heroes in it, arent really “super” in the same sense as say, Spider-Man is for example, I had to omit it from this list.  The Christopher Reeve Superman films were also a difficult ommission, but, since the technical ability to craft them to the same standard as say Watchmen, did not exist at the time and since comic book adaptations rely heavily on complex visuals, it had to be ommited from this top ten.  However, the first one at least would be in a top 20.

what about hell boy 1 an 2, sin city, wanted, you got two batman films in the list (an technically there is nothing super about him, hes just a dude in a suit) rubbish, rubbish!!!!!! an if v for vendeta is a superhero, so it road to perdition an a history of violence…..superman ( the original ) thought you loved that, i think all superman movies are poo, looking forward to the new one, but thought you liked them, kinda forgot about watchmen, not watched it in ages, i got the dvd animated comic as well, its sweet, i got the comics as well, but its a hard read, easier to watch an have some one read it to you, soundtrack to watchmen was amazing…..might go watch it now….holy crap its warm, i need a drink

    • It’s a top ten list Steve you goon. Hellboy and Superman 3 would make it into a top twenty. As for your Batman comment, check yo self fool! Now, go get a drink. Yo

    • trumpettune says:

  2. Just this Geek says:

Spidey two beats Spidey one by virtue of not being an extra long episode of Power Rangers. Doc Ock FTW.
    Also, Kick-Ass is sorely missing.

    • Victor De Leon says:

I was surprised to see Spider Man 2 was missing. It was a great list though.

      • filmfellajames says:

Victor and Just This Geek… In my humble opinion Spidey 2 is the better film for action, the train scene is hands down, my personal favourite superhero scene in any superhero film. I went with the first though for this top ten because of the pure joy I felt when I saw my childhood hero realised and beautifully rendered for the first time. It stayed with me and that’s why it trumped the second. Spidey 2 would be my number 11, Fo sho!

      • Victor De Leon says:

The first Spider Man is epic. No doubt.

    • I agree, Kick Ass was a great film. Not really sure it belongs on the list, though. I think based on what he included he should have named the list, differently.

      • filmfellajames says:

Justin, when making the list, my definition of the term ‘superhero’ encompassed the essence of a super heroic persona. Batman and Ironman use their resources and intellect for the betterment of mankind, therefore in this sense they reflect the ideas discussed in my prologue to the list. What they stand for is massive and the way they, as heroes, go about championing our cause despite the lack of mutation or Spidey sense etc, they still achieve the same result.

  3. steven says:

yeah, i just though, kick-ass, scott pilgrim vs world, dragon tiger gate, the crow, TMNT, technically, iron man an batman ain’t super 🙂 nor unbreakable, although its a great film, your list has angered me, ANGERED ME, but i suppose it has built an emotion in me, which is what you aim to do 🙂 but your list is a poo list 🙂 sleep time now

    • filmfellajames says:

Glad I made you angry Steve. I loved the Crow and TMNT but, TMNT wasn’t up to scratch in terms of standard, the Crow biased toward revenge, therefore omitted. Yo

  4. M.C. James says:

Great list. I love Tim Burton’s Batman from 1989; it’s one of my favorite films of all time.

    • Victor De Leon says:

I was excited to see that Burton’s Batman made the list. It gets dumped on so much now because of Nolan’s films, I do love Nolan’s vision but Burton’s 2 films still have charm and excitement.

      • M.C. James says:

Agreed, Burton and Nolan both did a fine job, in their own way.

      • Victor De Leon says:

Unfortunately the Burton Batman films just gradually went down the crapper as did the Superman films. I wish they would have been able to pull off what Nolan did and kept the original visions alive.

      • M.C. James says:

Yeah, without Burton at the helm, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin became comedies. This resulted in the character losing any mystique or darkness that made the first two films so engaging.

I’ve haven’t seen all of the Superman films, so I can’t comment on them. But, from what I understand, they suffered a similar fate.

      • Victor De Leon says:

Yes, the Superman films did spiral out of control. Though Superman Returns was flawed, I didn’t hate it. I would start at the first and there is a Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 that is very cool. Lester’s Superman film has it’s moments. The sum of it’s parts are better than the whole.

      • M.C. James says:

Cool. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have to check them out.

  5. Great list! I was so excited to see your #1 (because you 2-10 were spot-on), but guess what? I’ve NEVER seen The Watchmen. UGH!

Guess I have a new flick to add to the good ol’ Netflix queue. 😉

  6. What do you think of the new Spider-Man and the movie Kick-Ass?

  7. foreigninput says:

not to sound cruel but i honestly…honestly really love the fact that there is no superman movie anywhere up there…being a huge batman fan…twice on the list does it for me :)…well done you!

  8. swirlgirlversus says:

This was probably the best post I’ve read all month. Great list! I almost completely agree, though I would have switched Spider-man for Sin City and Unbreakable for X-Men. But that’s just me.. 🙂

  9. Janet Allen says:

Great list! I hadn’t thought of Unbreakable in this category, but it definitely fits – nice one! I haven’t actually seen Watchmen yet – it’s now on my lengthy “to watch” list. A “superhero” movie that I kind of enjoy (although, not so much a superhero movie as a spoof of superhero movies) is Mystery Men. Ben Stiller’s Mr. Furious and William H Macy’s Shoveler crack me up!

  10. skyride says:

Nice list, by and large (‘cept Spiderman, hated that film); but really, you coulda mentioned breasts a few more times– that REALLY is the most essential aspect of a superhero movie. >_<

  11. skyride says:

Ooo, and I just reflected on your title: technically Batman, Ironman and V are not superheroes, and thus those aren’t superhero movies… Tha’s all right though, I still like yer list. 😉

  12. jegfitness says:

I personally would move dark knight up to number 2 or 1. Also V for Vendetta I would move up into the top 5 somewhere. I think Spider Man is a bit overrated personally. It deserves top 10 but not the spot that it is in on your list. I also would add Sin City to the list in the top 5.

  13. Mohsen says:

I watch most of this list and i agree with you . number 1 is Watchmen

  14. Victor De Leon says:

Great list! you have some REALLY good titles in there. Sorry to see that Spider Man 2 and Superman The Movie are not in there but by just adding Burton’s Batman it evens it out a bit, I suppose. 🙂 I liked that you added Unbreakable and First Class. Not a fan of The Watchmen. I need to revisit that one. Good job and I like the blog!

  15. shythom says:

curious if you’ve seen The Crow and if so, would it make it on the top 20, 30, etc.? i thought it was a pretty good transition from paper to screen.

    • filmfellajames says:

The answer to that is yes. Top 20, revenge and vengeance as themes prevented the Crow and Punisher from inclusion in the top ten.

  16. John S says:

My problem with Unbreakable is that the central question could have been resolved in 15 seconds.

Wondering if you’re invulnerable? Jam a fork into the top of your hand. If it goes through the skin and hurts like a bastard and you bleed all over the table, you’re not invulnerable.

  17. cashgiftingeaze says:

Nice list! I still think the Dark Knight should be #1. The way Heath Ledger acted his part of the Joker was legendary.

  18. interesting! i’m not super into the marvel or DC realm of comics but i did enjoy the watchmen and i liked the dark knight as well. i would definitely put v for vendetta higher up on my own hypothetical list! this was cool though, thanks for sharing!

  19. trcapromo says:

Not a bad list. I do like the Blade movies but I’m a bit surprised you ranked “The Watchmen” so high.

  20. Some of these heroes aren’t real, are they?

  21. I have seen all ten of these movies, I am a BIG fan of the superhero movie genre, and I have to say your tastes differ greatly from mine. For starters, The Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Blade, and Burton’s Batman would probably be included on my Ten Worst list rather than the best. Unbreakable was an excellent movie, I see why you included it. Avengers is far and away my #1, with The Dark Knight #2. Your ideas are great food for thought, though.

  22. Really nice list. I loved Watchmen too, I am really happy to see it as number one!

  23. Nice list. Tim Burton was awesome and of course Dark Knight was amazing! You might enjoy my post on what Wonder Women can tell us about American culture. 🙂

What Can Wonder Woman Tell Us About American Culture?

  24. dakrizzz says:

SO COOOOOLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! I completely agree with you ;DDDD

  25. I had no ideia V for Vendetta was a comic! I guess this happens in this movie cathegory..

  26. juliebrowning18 says:

Love the list, and your pithy writing. I appreciate your thoughts, and give most of these a thumbs up as well, but my list would have to be topped off with Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Congratulations on being Freshly Squeezed.

  27. shlunka says:

I’d actually put The Crow easily in the top 3. While I enjoyed Watchmen, I thought it lacked some of the darker aspects of what would likely be the reality of becoming a “superhero”. Of course, when a city went “poof”, it reached an almost cynical turning point, but the story afterward just had too many holes in it. Honestly, humanity is going to unite and wage war against what literally has the powers of a deity? Nope, don’t think so. V for Vendetta was a great movie, liked the terrorism aspect, and also the Nolan takes on Batman were absolutely stunning. Great list, but I have a few disagreements with the order.

    Love #6…

  30. Agree on Avengers, Iron Man, Dark Knight and V for Vendetta. I’m curious about Watchmen, but I’ve yet to see it. As for the rest, I’ll prolly replace them with these:

    *Mystery Men
*Spiderman 2 because of Doc Ock, and better even than the most recent one.
*I do like, er, the 90’s Batmen, all the villains are memorable: Jim Carrey as the Riddler, Schwarzenneger as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy & Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman
*Sin City, but I do agree it doesn’t really seem like a ‘superhero’ movie
*Hulk, Ang Lee’s version. The next one suffered too much from mainstreamification. Sure, this one has lots of un-original scenes but I like the comicbook transition effects.

  31. Fred says:

Good list, thanks for taking the time to put it together! As always we won’t always agree and I think Sin City should have been on this list. Mickey Roarke’s turn as Marv alone should have been worthy of this compilation. And I know you mentioned Christopher Reeve, but his version of Superman didn’t make the cut either. Really? His Superman was and still is a definitive super hero film.

  33. blackfellow says:

Avengers should be pushed back, as it lacks substance. And Sin City! Sin City should be in the top 10.
    Great list though.

  34. wherethedaytakesme says:

    Awesome list!

  35. too bad i havent seen watchmen, well its in your number one so it think its worth watchin on dvd or something.

  36. hodgeadam says:

I keep seeing lists similar to this and they all vary. I think it depends on which comics the blogger or writer is even aware of. Most times only the obvious ones like X Men, Batman and Spiderman make the list.

I give props to including Watchman, but one cannot overlook the shot by shot transformation of the Sin City book to the screen. It was flawless. Other than that decent list.

  37. On superheros: I was diagnosed with a weird lung cancer a few years ago. I worked in a lab at the time and when I was going down the elevator, I noticed a small spider. I thought it would be really cool if the spider bit me and I suddenly had superhero-like powers. That’s when I came up with my motto for life: Be your own superhero, out to save your own life.

Also, I like your list, but it’s missing one that, at the time, was truly amazing. Dick Tracy (1990).

  38. I don’t think I have watched a single one of these.

Why is there no Superman movie in the list?

    • filmfellajames says:

Well, my answer to this is that Superman has unfortunately been let down by either bad writing, flimsy effects and lack of edge and substance. Don’t get me wrong I love the Superman films but, none have smashed it like say The Dark Knight or Watchmen. D.C have realised that as the darker, more adult comic producers they have flopped out when it comes to Superman because in the past they have pandered to silliness instead of focussing on character and spectacle. Goddam it, Superman should have been number one because of who he is, what he can do and what he stands for, but timing, effects and script have failed the Man of Steel. I’m hopeful for the next movie, could be astounding, but based on past form…I’m weary. It NEEDS to be great. Superman deserves it.

  41. crabstir says:

omg i love X-Men i watched it and it was awesome

  42. Jane says:

Love a good movie critique, but I’m ashamed to admit I’ve only seen one on this list — the original batman. Honestly, Superhero movies aren’t my thing, but I’m going to page around the rest of the blog and see what I might find…

Watchmen is right on the money. I don’t think Unbreakable is a superhero movie though. I’d replace it with Kick Ass. I think The Dark Knight Rises should also have a place somewhere in the below five, but then it would be biased. Look out for that rumored Deadpool movie!

  44. capriciouslym says:

Excellent list. Watchmen is usually unappreciated, glad to see it as your numero uno!

  45. Enjoy the TDK, First Class, Spider-Man, and Iron Man mentions. However, I have to disagree with the Top 2. Avengers is ok but it is not something that can stand up against the numerous amount of superhero filsm out there. There is just not much substance in that film outside of too many one-liners and the first two-thirds not matching the sustainable end make it just fair. Also, Watchmen I felt was a very bad adaptation (I love the graphic novel). Synder added too much slow motion and ridiculousness into a film that didn’t need it.

  46. Not a bad list. I’m a superhero too. Just sayin.

  47. I love how you picked “Watchmen” as #1. Personally, I loved it. I think a lot of people misunderstood the movie.

  48. surroundedbyimbeciles says:

I’m glad other people like Watchmen. It is a great movie that was ravaged for no good reason. That being said, Unbreakable is the best movie on the list. The ending is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen.

  49. schwillymaze says:

Spiderman is way too high on the list and I personally think X-men first class is too low.
Watchmen is pretty awesome though so no issues there. Love the inclusion of V from Vendetta on this list as well. Keep it up brah.

  50. There is no way Watchmen is no. 1… just no way over avengers? not a chance….

  51. irtclothing says:

Watchmen is number 1???? I browsed through it but it looked dumb. Maybe i should watch it after all

  52. Great list! Though like others have said, Watchmen wouldn’t be my #1. Also you didn’t mention Xmen 1, IMO that would be top 3.
    1. Dark Knight
    2. Avengers
    3. Xmen

  53. Good list! Haven’t seen the no. 1 pick though.

  54. Yakhtar Ali says:

This list is bullshit. all are are not super hero movies, only few are.

  55. This is a solid list of really good interchangeable films aside from one entrant. X-Men: First Class, the movie itself was good for people seeking entertainment, but what it did to the X-Men franchise was complete and utter bullshit. First Class is a great movie if you know absolutely ZERO about the X-men. Otherwise it is practically the worst of them all.

There were mutants who were pointless and made up just to get from plot point A to B. It was a rushed concept of assembling a team within a week to thwart the Cuban Missile Crisis, as opposed to the YEARS of friendship and preparation that the X-Men took to get to that point. Also, you have crap like having Havok(aka Cyclops’ YOUNGER brother) on the team when according to the team lore he shouldn’t be. You have tornado man(aka ‘mega man’ villain) doing dumb stuff along with faery wings girl. A dumb party scene when suddenly every ones allegiance means dick. Where was the actual “first class”?

First Class should have put aside all of the team ruining crap and just focused on Xavier and Magneto working as a duo doing badass things leading up to the creation of the team. The movie misses hard because it leads you to believe they became best buds in a few days and then had an emotional separation to become lifelong enemies all within that week long span. Instead of having them work together for years showing how Eric helps build Cerebro and showing how Professor X helps with Eric’s therapy, only to fail, the movie only creates a half-assed relationship.

I agree the casting was well done for Xavier and Magneto, and they had great chemistry on screen. But the story just didn’t make sense. It didn’t hold true to the comics in any way shape or form and just gave us something pretty to look at. It does not belong on this list, or any comic book movie list for that matter.

Very interesting choices. Perhaps not exactly what I would have picked, but I definitely value your opinion. I have to question your choice in super heroines/femme fatales though. January Jones played the same character she’s been playing for the past five years, Betty Draper, just in diamond form. Kirsten Dunst, okay, I get the nipple appeal, but she hasn’t been awesome since Interview With a Vampire and maybe Virgin Suicides. Though I will definitely give you Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre and Silk Spectre II respectively.

    Nice post.

  57. Cafe says:

Totally with you on V for Vendetta and Dark Knight. I have to say though that I was in agony watching Watchmen. The night before a very early morning flight as well — totally not worth the loss of sleep 😦

  58. iwhowander says:

I’m ashamed to say I’ve only seen four! Motivation to watch the rest 🙂 Great list!

  59. presjzuma says:

Great Blog. Personally, I would have put Unbreakable at No.1. But that’s just me. I love the way it was filmed. What a great movie. Oh, and what about Megamind…now there’s a superhero/villian all rolled into one, fancy costume to boot!

  60. followechoes says:

I have seen all of the apart from V for Vendetta. Great list 😀

  61. You had me at “superhero movies”! I’ve seen most of these films and I am so glad that ‘Avengers assemble’, ‘Spiderman’, ‘Batman’ (Heath Ledger!!!), ‘Ironman’ and ‘X-men’ are all in there!

  62. నంద says:

That list pretty much covers all the super-heroic moviee am aware of.. thanks for the facts and cool stuff..

  63. dunkdad says:

Great Post! Bodacious and Gnarly! Funny also! But what about Kick Ass and Spider-Man 2! Also, what about Captain America or Iron Man 2!

  64. jadenagaraja says:

    Nice ones 🙂
    I would have give “V for Vendetta ” – No.1

  65. illsendyouanemil says:

you forgot to mention the super-hero of actors. Did you know that when Alexander Bell invented the telephone he had 3 missed calls from Chuck Norris…

  66. philthyanimal says:

Great list and prepared with a view of quality over quantity. Watchmen at number 1, yessir. However, and it’s an effing HUGE however… Spiderman has no place in a top 10 superhero movie list. He may be your favourite superhero (or one of your favourite), but no way does the film deserve 3rd spot. Better than Dark Knight and Hellboy and Burton’s Batman films? Wake up and get your hand off it.

  67. Ammon says:

What, no Condorman? No, not really. Great post! This is a fun topic for discussion as we’re finally being treated to the superhero movies we’ve always wanted.

  68. adsbuz says:

I think again its my opinion that its little unfair with AVATAR don’t you think it should be in the list

  69. poppiejunkie says:

Hey awesome list but you forgot one ‘Batman’ movie that no one ever thinks of: ‘Batman Returns’. Here’s why it’s awesome:http://poppiejunkie.wordpress.com/2012/07/03/the-power-of-the-mask-in-batman-returns/

  70. ruth says:

Nice to see Unbreakable on this list though it might be placed higher if it were on mine. Interesting to see V for Vendetta, LOVE that film but I never thought of it as a superhero film. I like what you said about Christopher Reeve, a real life hero with or without a cape.

  71. Tippi says:

I’m so glad you have Unbreakable on here! Such an overlooked film, because it’s so understated. The ending was so creepy and wonderful. And Blade is one of my all-time favorites: “The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping. There’s another world beneath it, the REAL world.” haha I bust that out every chance I get!!

I have to disagree on First Class though. I was extremely disappointed with that movie. Michael Fassbender’s Magneto completely stole the show; it should have been HIS movie. They spread themselves too thin with all the new characters, and they all suffered for it. Also I love Spider-man, but I would put part 2 up there instead of part 1. Peter Parker’s development in that film is amazing to watch, and it has one of the most emotionally effective scenes in ANY superhero movie ever.

  72. News just in folks…Part Two, the Top 10 Worst Superhero Films has just gone to the editor. Expect it soon!!! Yo

  73. Its here folks, Part 2…The top 10 Worst Superhero films. Enjoy. http://bit.ly/W1aS0v

  74. John says:

I came to this page wondering where “Watchmen” would be, since I also put it as #1 on my list. I was not disappointed with this article and their reasoning behind why it’s #1 on this list.
