Dirty Laundry – Review

(Fan Request) Dirty Laundry – Review

Review by FilmFellaJames – 9/10

When one of our fans lead us to short fan film, #DIRTYLAUNDRY pure joy flowed forth.  Forget the detergent, this mini-movie directed by Phil Joanou requires none as crime is getting wiped off the street by Thomas Jane reprising his role as Frank Castlefrom the The Punisher once more.

The story is a simple one.  Frank is going about doing his dirty laundry when a group of thugs appear harassing 3 hookers.  Main thug, Goldtooth drags one off and rapes her under a motor way across the street from the laundromat where Frank is filling the washing machine with his darks.  He seems to let this atrocious act pass until Goldtooth after adjusting his pants, sets his sites on a young lad crossing the street.  Goldtooth tells the boy he will have to peddle drugs for him if he wants to remain alive in his neighbourhood and when the boy refuses, the gang decided to make him change his mind with force.  Frank decides enough is enough and exacts some punishment on the gang with a bottle of Jack Daniels.  After dousing the battered Goldtooth with the full contents of the bottle, leaving a lit lighter on the floor near him, Frank returns to gather his stuff.  The battered and raped prostitute then kicks over the lighter setting Goldtooth alight.  Punishment fo sho.  Frank then leaves the laundromat but drops a black t-shirt on the floor.  The boy picks it up to hand over to Frank as he leaves, but Frank doesn’t want it and tells the boy to keep it as it has a hole in it anyway.  When the boy unfurls it the t-shirt it has the Punisher symbol upon it…dun dun dun!!!!

Sammi Rotibi as Goldtooth. In this shot Goldtooth thinks he is the real badass, but dude, I got news for yo ass, “Goldtooth, you ain’t met Frank yet, beatch!”

Expertly crafted and vicious as hell Thomas Jane said the following of the piece when it was unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con International this year:

“I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in – a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish; we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

Well I sure as shit did Mr Jane, so much so that I demand you make another Punisher movie to appease my needs.  A sentiment echoed by the nearly 2 million people who have viewed this short film.

It was very slick and entertaining with everyone in the cast playing their parts to stellar levels.  Ron Perlman even pops up as the guy in the liquor store across the road.  Loved you in Hellboy Ron!!  The only thing that was slightly silly about it was the fact that they used James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmers’ music from The Dark Knight in the short.  Way too iconic for this piece methinks, they could have just got something else less obvious.  All in all though the pace was tight and the action pure Punisher.  Bones are a breakin.  The punishment at the end was pure revenge, maybe not a dish best served cold since Goldtooth went up like a bonfire on Guy Fawkes night, nonetheless, fierce and apt as hell.

Thomas Jane kicks ass as Frank Castle once more, with feeling, for the fans. God Bless you Tom!

Thomas Jan hasn’t lost any of his edge either and I am so glad he loves the role.  Something that really comes across in his statement and his portrayal of the character.  The Punisher is Marvels hardcore hero, not particularly super, but vengeance personified, a more real life hero than any of the rest of their offerings.  He did the part justice and I really hope that this is not the end of Frank Castle.  I’m hopeful.

Check out the mini movie right here by clicking this link, you will be glad you did.

Many thanks to Steve Taylor for the heads up, nice one Steve.

Have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Just finished reading Aronofsky’s Batman Year One script and while very rough, it at least brings the crimefighter character back to their vigilante Taxi Driver roots. Which Dirty Laundry has done, and very well too. So much better than the absurdly hi-tech morally self-satisfied dullards that usually pass as superheroes. Nice.

Thought this was great. Jane was great as Frank Castle in the original movie. It’s a shame it was let down by a poor script. However, although, this felt like a student movie, kudos to the guys who got Jane and Perlman to be in it. And the punishment is harsh. Deserved harsh punishment. You gotta love it when the bad guys get fucked up! Thanks to Mr. Taylor for the recommend.
